What chemicals are used to improve the flow properties of oil?
2024-12-31
To improve the flow properties of oil, various chemicals are employed at different stages of oil production, transportation, and processing.
The factor that most significantly affects the pour point and wax formation of crude oil is wax. Here, "wax" refers to n-alkanes with higher carbon numbers in crude oil, generally those with 15 or more carbon atoms. Wax in crude oil with carbon numbers above 20 can impact oil well production. n-Alkanes from C18 to C35 are considered soft wax, while iso-alkanes from C35 to C64 are considered hard wax, with melting points between 49-60°C.
When the temperature drops to a certain level, wax crystals will precipitate from the crude oil, leading to wax deposition and solidification, causing the crude oil to lose its fluidity.
Polymeric wax inhibitors are all oil-soluble comb polymers with side chains. These side chains have structures and polar groups similar to those of paraffin molecules, forming distorted wax crystals that are difficult to grow with the paraffin molecules. The length of the side chains in polymeric wax inhibitors is directly related to the efficacy of wax prevention: when the average carbon number of the side chains is close to the peak carbon number of the wax in the crude oil, it is most beneficial for wax precipitation, achieving the best wax inhibition effect.
