Schlumberger's China Land Service Headquarters

Recently, Schlumberger's China Land Service Headquarters has been established and put into operation in Shuangliu District, Chengdu. With an investment of 700 million yuan and covering an area of 42 acres, this new base is four times larger than the original one. It has become a core vehicle for the company to deepen its layout in China's land oil and gas market, marking a new stage in its strategy of "taking root in China and serving the world."

Sherif Shohdy, President of Schlumberger Asia

Sherif Shohdy, President of Schlumberger Asia, pointed out: "The successful completion of the China Land Service Headquarters is the result of the joint efforts of the local government, partners, and all employees. Chengdu's innovative vitality and talent advantages are highly aligned with Schlumberger's global development strategy. The launch of the China Land Service Headquarters is a tangible reflection of our long-term commitment to the Chinese market. In the future, we will rely on the technology experimentation and training center within the base to deepen local cooperation and promote technological innovation and transformational development in the energy sector."

The History of SLB China Land Base

Schlumberger's connection with Chengdu began in 2002 with the establishment of a base that initially only provided basic regional services. In October 2014, Schlumberger Technology Services (Chengdu) Co., Ltd. was registered in Shuangliu District, Chengdu, marking the first time its business spanned the entire oil and gas field development industry chain, covering core areas such as geophysical exploration, drilling services, and completion and well testing. With its professional capabilities, the company has participated in 332 bidding projects and obtained 10 qualification certificates and 51 administrative licenses. After signing the investment agreement in 2022, the new headquarters, completed after three years, achieved a qualitative leap, with a scale four times larger than the original base.

Ko Ning, Managing Director of Schlumberger North Asia, stated: "The launch of Schlumberger's China Land Service Headquarters is not only a proactive response to the national Western Development Strategy but will also play an important role in ensuring energy security and achieving the 'dual carbon' goals." The establishment of Schlumberger's China Land Service Headquarters further improves the ecological cluster of the energy equipment industry in Shuangliu. It is expected to attract supporting enterprises from upstream and downstream, forming an industrial closed loop from technology research and development and equipment manufacturing to on-site services.

As one of the first energy technology companies to enter China after the reform and opening up, Schlumberger has been deeply involved in the Chinese market for over 40 years, building a product and service system covering the entire lifecycle of oil and gas exploration and development. It has established eight operational bases, two technology centers, and several joint ventures in China.

From a geographical perspective, Schlumberger has basically established a three-dimensional base network in China. In the core North China region, the Beijing base carries strategic decision-making and high-end R&D functions. Its Beijing Innovation Workshop is one of the seven global innovation workshops, focusing on breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and energy digitalization technologies. The Tianjin Lingang Base, established in 1984, has developed into a full-chain service center covering geophysical exploration, drilling, and logging, supporting offshore oil and gas development in the Bohai Bay. In the western region, the Chengdu Land Service Headquarters serves as the core, radiating to the southwestern oil and gas areas. It is reported that Schlumberger has simultaneously established a "China Innovation Center" in Chengdu, collaborating with PetroChina, Sinopec, and Southwest Petroleum University on technological breakthroughs.

Currently, the center has developed an intelligent drilling fluid system suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure formations and has localized the "one-trip drilling" technology for shale gas horizontal wells, reducing single-well costs by 25%. The company's Asia-Pacific president stated: "The Chengdu base will promote the localization and adaptation of over 60% of core technologies."

Collaboration Opportunities between YouzhuCHEM and Schlumberger

Backed by Southwest Petroleum University, YouzhuCHEM can collaborate with key resources of the university, such as its National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Oilfield Chemistry, CNPC Key Laboratory of Oilfield Chemistry, CNOOC Key Laboratory of Enhanced Oil Recovery, CNPC Key Laboratory of HSE, Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Field Applied Chemistry, and Sichuan Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Green Hydrogen Production Equipment and Integrated Storage and Transportation in Oil and Gas Fields. Under the leadership of its parent company, Unibrom Group, the leaders (engineers from Clariant) have over 27 years of extensive experience in oilfield specialty chemicals. They have achieved practical applications of various chemicals, such as:
  • 1
YouzhuCHEM's environmentally friendly, wide-temperature, water-soluble Mannich base adsorption-type corrosion inhibitor: effective in pH 5-12 and temperatures of 10-150°C; a single dosing protects for over 200 days; corrosion rate below 5 mpy; classic design reflects the environmental and sustainable characteristics of this corrosion inhibitor.

High-efficiency crude oil demulsifiers applied in the Gulf of Mexico, the Middle East, Russia, Southeast Asia, and other regions.

A drilling lubricant that combines lubricity, inhibition, and encapsulation properties (comparable to Schlumberger's Ultra Free, Halliburton's Baralube, and Baker Hughes' Penetrex). Meanwhile, YouzhuCHEM has also designed a high-performance, environmentally friendly ester-based lubricant derived from natural fats and oils, which has been certified by Aramco and used in drilling sites.

A high-performance detergent (comparable to Schlumberger's MI Swaco DeepClean), designed for downhole cleaning and wetting in cementing environments and also for rig cleaning, has been certified by Saudi Aramco and Baker Hughes.

Emulsifiers designed for drilling (including primary, secondary, and one drum emulsifiers) that can compete with Schlumberger's VERSA series and have been certified by ADNOC.

While leveraging innovation in oilfield specialty chemicals, YouzhuCHEM collaborates with Southwest Petroleum University to successfully design and test diversion acid systems for acidification and fracturing operations (performance under different acid concentrations, temperatures, pressures, and viscosities). Simultaneously, YouzhuCHEM is also investing in research on additives required for cementing operations.

Schlumberger's China Land Service Headquarters in Shuangliu District, Chengdu, is very close to YouzhuCHEM. While our company feels the pressure, we also hope to achieve win-win cooperation with this industry leader!
