what is Barite?
- Barite is a non-metallic mineral composed mainly of barium sulfate (BaSO4). Pure barite appears white and glossy, with a specific gravity ranging from 4.0 to 4.6. It is chemically stable, insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid, non-magnetic, non-toxic, and chemically inert. Baryte is a mixture that is widely used as a weighting agent in oil and gas drilling muds.
Barite in Oilfield

When drilling some oil and gas wells, the specific gravity of the commonly used drilling mud or clay is around 2.5, while the specific gravity of water is 1. Therefore, the specific gravity of the mud is relatively low, and sometimes the weight of the mud cannot balance the underground oil and gas pressure, which may lead to a blowout accident. In cases of high underground pressure, it is necessary to increase the mud's specific gravity. Adding baryte powder to the mud is an effective measure to increase its specific gravity. For drilling mud, the baryte should generally be ground to a fineness of 325 mesh or finer. If the fineness of the baryte is insufficient, it may easily precipitate. Baryte used for drilling mud must have a specific gravity greater than 4.2, a BaSO4 content of no less than 95%, and soluble salts of less than 1%.
In 2023, India produced an estimated 2.7 million metric tons of barite from mines, making it the largest barite producer worldwide. China was the second leading barite producing country that year, with an output of 1.9 million metric tons. Barite is commonly used as a filler, extender, or weighting agent in a variety of products.
